Do You Celebrate National Flossing Day?
For many years, the day after Thanksgiving has been a time when retailers expect to find people lined up outside the store to shop on Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the holiday season. At Today’s Dental Comfort, we want to celebrate a lesser known holiday, National Flossing Day! While this day does not involve crowds of people lining up outside our office, it signifies something greater. Established in 2000, National Flossing Day was created to raise awareness about the importance of flossing to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Important Reasons to Floss
Do you floss every day? If your answer is no, you are not alone. We know that many of our patients are brushing their teeth multiple times a day but are not flossing every day like we recommend. Unfortunately, this may be leading to oral health problems in your future. Here are some important reasons why flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth:
Improves Bad Breath
Maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine is one of the best ways to prevent bad breath. This includes brushing twice a day for a minimum of two minutes as well as flossing once a day.
Prevents Tooth Decay
When food lingers on your teeth, it can lead to tooth decay. No matter how well you brush your teeth, there will always be tiny food particles that linger between them. Flossing is the only way to remove these particles before they begin to negatively affect your oral health.
Prevents Gum Disease
Gum disease can develop when there is plaque buildup between the teeth and along the gumline. Unfortunately, there are not many symptoms of gum disease, so you may be affected for some time before you receive a diagnosis. Routine flossing promotes healthy gums.
