While you may brush and floss regularly, food can settle in the tiny crevices of your back teeth, causing plaque and tooth decay. Sealants are used to cover this area of your teeth to prevent dental issues like cavities and the need for fillings. Children and teenagers are excellent candidates for this dental treatment as they are more susceptible to cavities.
Dental sealants are a very thin, clear coating that is applied to the teeth to create a barrier between the tooth and harmful bacteria. The back teeth are more prone to cavities as those are the teeth that grind up food when you chew. They are also more challenging to clean, especially for children. The process of applying the sealant is quick and painless. To begin the treatment, the dentist will first clean and dry the tooth. An acidic solution is then applied to the tooth. This solution will roughen the surface so that the sealant will adhere to the tooth. The sealant is then painted onto the tooth, making sure to cover any grooves on the tooth surface. The dentist will then use a light to help harden the sealant. You will be able to eat and drink right away after the treatment.
Sealants can last up to 10 years. During each visit, your dentist will check to make sure the sealants are not chipped or worn. While they can help protect your tooth from cavities, they are not a substitute for brushing and flossing.
