Tooth extraction is a simple process that is performed in our office with anesthesia so that you have as comfortable an experience as possible. Your dentist may recommend this common treatment for reasons such as :
- The tooth is damaged or decayed beyond repair
- The infected tooth that can’t be saved by a root canal
- Teeth loosened due to periodontal disease and can not be saved
- Overcrowding – For children and teens getting ready for orthodontics, a tooth may be taken out so that other teeth have room to grow in.
To prepare for the removal of a tooth, your dentist will administer anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain. The tooth area will become numb and you will feel numbness a few hours after the treatment. The dentist will then begin the extraction. You won’t feel pain, but you may feel pressure. The dentist, however, will make sure to ask you during the procedure if you do feel any pain.
After the procedure, the dentist will control the bleeding with small stitches. You’ll be given gauze to absorb any additional bleeding, although that should be minimal. Replace the gauze as necessary. For any pain following the procedure, your dentist might recommend an over-the-counter pain medication. Within the first 24 hours of the treatment, take care when eating and drinking by avoiding that side of the mouth. Depending on which tooth has been pulled, the site can take about 7 to 10 days to fully heal.
The overall goal of tooth extraction is to take away pain, restore your dental health or improve the long term appearance of your smile. If you have any concerns or questions about tooth extraction in Burton, MI, please call our office at (810) 736-9778 to speak to one of our staff.
