What to Know About Maxillofacial Surgery
At times, our team at Today’s Dental Comfort may determine that a dental procedure cannot fully resolve an issue you are experiencing. In this case, we may recommend a maxillofacial surgery. This type of surgery can resolve a number of issues with the mouth, jaw, and face. Many patients notice an improvement in their appearance as well as the function of the problem area.
Why Would You Need Surgery?
Due to the seriousness of the surgery and the requirement for medical and dentistry knowledge, we do not recommend maxillofacial surgery lightly. It may be recommended for patients with facial disfigurement or trauma, abnormal growths in the face, neck, or mouth, as well as tumors and infections, among other conditions. We may also recommend surgery to improve:
- Chronic facial, jaw, and neck discomfort
- Abnormal bite
- Cleft lip and palate
- Removal of excess tissue to improve sleep apnea
- Impacted wisdom teeth or complicated tooth extractions
- Temporomandibular joint surgery
What to Expect During Recovery?
Maxillofacial surgery is life changing for many of our patients. Although more involved than most other treatments, many patients report that surgery changes their lives for the better. Patients report an improved appearance, relief from discomfort and pressure, better sleep quality, and an improvement in their ability to eat and speak.
While each patient and their circumstance will have their own recovery guidelines, this form of surgery can be very involved and require some special care. Certain procedures such as wisdom teeth removal can have patients up and about comfortably in a few short days, while other surgeries can require a much longer recovery time. Be sure to follow post-surgery instructions carefully to avoid complications.
