Are Bleeding Gums Cause For Concern?
Have you noticed signs of pink or red when you floss or brush your teeth? If so, that is an indication you are experiencing bleeding gums. Almost everyone experiences bleeding gums from time to time, especially if food becomes trapped between the teeth or you brush and floss a little too vigorously. It is important to contact us at Today’s Dental Comfort if you notice your gums bleed frequently, as that can indicate an issue with your gums and overall oral health. Some other possible causes of bleeding gums includes:
Poor Oral Hygiene
As mentioned above, if you brush vigorously, you can cause your gums to bleed. Gums can also bleed if you are too rough on your gums when using dental floss. Be sure to brush using gentle strokes and do not forcefully push the dental floss into your gums. If you are unsure how to clean your teeth properly, we will be happy to help you during your next visit.
Medication
You may be surprised to learn the number of medications that list bleeding gums as a side effect. This is one of the reasons we ask our patients to inform our team of any changes to their medical history since their last visit. Not only can certain medications lead to bleeding gums, but some can change the manner in which we are able to clean your teeth.
Gum Disease
This condition occurs when there is a buildup of plaque and tartar along the gumline. Unfortunately, gum disease often remains undiagnosed because there are not a large number of warning signs. One of the few warning signs is bleeding gums.
If you experience bleeding gums it is important not to worry, but it is important to visit us soon. If you are located in the Burton, MI area, we recommend calling our office to schedule an appointment. We can perform an examination and determine the exact cause and recommend a treatment plan. We look forward to helping get your oral health back on track.
