What Is Dental Plaque And Why Is It Harmful To Your Oral Health?
At Today’s Dental Comfort, our goal is to help our patients become educated about the best ways to improve their oral health. One way to help your oral health is to make sure you have a thorough oral hygiene routine. If you often feel your teeth seem fuzzy or slimy, there is a good chance you are not cleaning them properly. The fuzzy or slimy feeling you are experiencing is most likely plaque. Plaque is a sticky film that coats the teeth and is caused by bacteria from food and drink.
How to Remove Dental Plaque
Thankfully, removing dental plaque is not difficult. When plaque is not removed from the mouth, it will continue to accumulate and turn into tartar. Tartar can lead to issues such as decay and gum disease. The easiest way to remove plaque from your mouth is to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly and carefully. Brushing should be done for a minimum of two minutes twice a day. It is also important to floss at least once a day, preferably before you brush your teeth at the end of the day. Failure to floss regularly can lead to an accumulation of plaque and bacteria between the teeth. It is also helpful to use mouthwash to finish the job after brushing and flossing.
During your routine hygiene examinations and cleanings, our team removes any built-up plaque from the surface of the teeth, between the teeth, and along the gumline. Additionally, we check that there are no problem areas in your mouth. We can also teach you how to properly brush and floss your teeth if you have any questions or concerns.
