We Can Save Your Teeth!
One of our main goals is to do everything we can to save your natural teeth. This is one of the reasons we stress the importance of scheduling any needed treatments as soon as possible. When you do not care for your teeth properly or avoid treatment, it can lead to serious oral health complications and the need for tooth extraction, but we are hopeful we can restore the tooth with a root canal before we have to resort to that. Read on to learn more about this treatment and to understand why it’s not as bad as you might imagine.
Reasons for a Root Canal
There can be serious complications for your oral health when you delay minor treatments, such as a filling. The decay will continue to progress through the inside of the tooth and into the tooth root. When this occurs, we will recommend a root canal. We may also recommend a root canal when:
- There is trauma to the tooth
- A large filling needs to be replaced and there is not enough tooth structure
- A crack or break reaches the pulp inside the tooth
What to Know About Treatment
Many patients have a negative response when they learn they need a root canal, and it is often because they don’t understand what the treatment entails. A root canal is simply a more involved filling. Instead of only removing decay from the tooth structure, a root canal removes decay from the tooth structure that has made its way into the root. A root canal procedure entails opening the tooth, removing the infected pulp, thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the root canal system, inserting a filling into the tooth root, and then sealing the area. Oftentimes, the treatment is completed with an artificial tooth structure, such as a dental crown. Be sure to follow our after-treatment instructions to ensure success with the treatment.
